Black History Month ~ Today celebrate our colour Doe…

A week ago was a milestone for the most important person in my life.

16 years ago, this person entered my life and turned it upside down. I fell in love like I had never before. I could not sleep, eat and was aware of her every move. She only had to flinch and I would know if she needed me. She was and is the most beautiful person I know.

She is considerate, kind, funny, witty, warm, grounded as well as strong, sassy, confident and will stand up for what and whom she believes in. For this to merge and form in 16 years and for me to have watched this unfold has been the most amazing experience.

I am still besotted as I was since the first time I lay eyes on her and continue to love her more each day that passes.

My pride in her comes from all the above attributes but also from the fact that she is motivated to do the best she can in all she puts her mind to, no matter what it is. This give me great confidence that life ahead for her will be okay no matter what challenges she will face, as one thing I know for sure, there will be challenges ahead as we all know through our life experiences. She is proud of who she is, she is proud of where she has come from. She will always be that.

Last week we were at an awards show for people of colour. Halfway through, she looked at me and said “I have never been in a place with so many black people in one place, I feel great. Thank you for letting me come”. She was so emotional I said to her “imagine there are people who this for them is their everyday, so just make sure you remember who you are always and be an example in situations when there is only you out of all these people in this room.”

Life since she came into my life has not always been great but her presence has always made things seem better than they really are.

She is the reason I am what I am today.
The reason I do what I do today.
The same for all my tomorrows.

She is also beautiful to look at. She is my Yazmin, my daughter who in Black History Month celebrated her 16th birthday.

Her skin tone? She is stunning in Doe.

No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Our deepest wishes are whispers of our authentic selves. We must learn to respect them. We must learn to listen.

I used to want the words “She tried” on my tombstone. Now I want “She did it”
